Hiring The Right Roofer
Ask before hiring a roofing contractor
- If the contractor is licensed by your state
- If the contractor carries roofing insurance
- To show you their BBB records
- Who will do the actual work (is there a subcontractor)?
- For written estimate showing what exactly he will do
- For written guarantee for work to be performed
- Is he going to obtain township permits
- If he is doing this type of work on daily basis or is it their side job
- About time frame: when can they start and how long is it going to take
Before hiring the lowest bidding roofer compare your estimates
- Are they all using same type/quality of the material?
Some roofers lower prices by using low quality roofing material
- Will the price not change?
Some contractors lower estimate price and then charge extra for something that was not included in the contract
- Will they be present when work is performed?
Some contractors use subcontractors and they are not present on job site until it is time to collect payment
- What are the warranty details?
How long the contractor will honor his workmanship warranty
- How much deposit they want?
Be careful if large deposit is required (50% or more) - there is no reason to demand so much money up front
